...I enjoyed reading this book. As a reader I could both improve my knowledge of some of the statistical procedures and obtain a better understanding of some aspects of corpus linguistics. Applied linguistics postgraduate students and researchers will find this book helpful in understanding some of the complex statistical procedures like DFA.

The overall benefit from Cantos Gómez’s Statistical Methods in Language and Linguistic Research is thus clear: Language researchers aiming to use statistics in their research can use this resource as guiding reference. Other language students whose investigation may not need to rely on quantitative methods, may discover in the multitude of case scenarios described direct evidence for statistical extension in their work (for instance when comparing sets and grouping elements according to linguistic features, or even if examining stylistic aspects in literary works).

Statistical Methods in Language and Linguistic Research provides a useful and accessible introduction to the world of statistics for beginners. The main advantage of the book… is the fact that it offers a detailed explanation of classical statistical techniques. The text contains many examples, which will definitely help a novice to understand the logic behind the statistical tests. Another strong point is the systematic discussion and comparison of parametric and non-parametric methods offered in Chapter 3. Since linguistic data tend to deviate from normality, this approach is very welcome.’

A thorough read of this book would benefit any applied linguist conducting quantitative research, regardless of orientation and background, but especially those interested in analyzing corpus data. Few methods authors in the field have ventured into the statistical territory mapped out in this book. Even fewer have succeeded, as this book has, in presenting the material in such an approachable manner.’

The aim of the book is to illustrate the contribution of statistics and quantitative methods to linguistic analysis, studies and research and the author has fully achieved the goal by presenting most valued quantitative techniques for working empirically through corpora and texts and illustrating them with the help of sufficient examples. Without any doubt it is of special interest to students, researchers and tutors of linguistics and mathematical linguistics (especially statistical/quantitative linguistics).

…the book provides many examples taken from different research studies, such as literature and language acquisition. …A large number of tables and figures facilitate the comprehension of the models proposed.
