Description Abstract The first part of the book examined theoretical tensions between the social and the individual in their approaches, while this second part explores how they are resolved in data-based research. The research presented here in this chapter represents an attempt at ‘widening the investigative lens’ (Benson and Cooker, Chapter 1, this volume) to understand the individual’s language learning experience by simultaneously focusing on the social, cultural and historical contexts in which the learner participates.
