6. Description Abstract Recent work on the prehistory of the Fens is used to illustrate the potential of an opportunistic approach to the survey of a wet environment. A variety of environmental and archaeological approaches are examined, the potential of wet and dry sites is compared , and the processes which alter the archaeological record after burial are fully assessed. the conclusion that wet areas offer an enormous potential is drawn and the problems of examining deeply buried landscapes are investigated. Finally, the practical approach to examining these buried landscapes through the investigation of exposures in dykes is discussed
