Description

This volume compliments Charming Beauties and Frightful Beasts, which focuses on animals in South Asian religion, and Soulless Matter, Seats of Energy, which deals with metals, gems and minerals in South Asian religion, both also edited by Fabrizio Ferari and Thomas Dähnhardt. By drawing from the immensely rich repertoire of beliefs, myths, rituals, folklore, arts and sciences perpetuated all over the social and religious spectrum of the Subcontinent, Roots of Wisdom, Branches of Devotion gives a colorful account of the vivid picture the diverse cultural environment of the Indian subcontinent offers on the theme of plant life. It is multidisciplinary in its approach including contributions from anthropology, history, religious studies, medicine and medical humanities, folklore, literature, hermeneutics and philosophy. In exploring the way in which various religious traditions have represented and reflected upon the botanical environment the volume uncovers the negotiations that take place and stresses the need for interdisciplinarity in environmental research and religious practice, knowledge and narratives.
