6. Description Abstract The topic I wish to address in this chapter, ‘Systemic functional linguistics in the round: imagining foreign language education for a global world’, is the result of interactions with my SFL colleagues in the real world and through their writings. What I learned in both contexts has had considerable effect on my interpretation of a number of vexing issues in foreign language (FL) education in colleges and universities in the United States.
