It provides the rationale for the volume and provides summaries of the various chapters, as well as offering the definition of humanism guiding the volume by which humanism is understood to be "a progressive philosophy of life that, without theism and other supernatural beliefs, affirms our ability and responsibility to lead ethical lives of personal fulfillment that aspire to the greater good of humanity."
