Description Abstract This chapter discusses the life of Ippen Shōnin (1239 1289), founder of the Ji Sect of Japanese Pure Land Buddhism, lived during the latter half of the Kamakura period, at a time when Dōgen (1200–1253) and Nichiren (1222–1282) were active, and Shinran (1173–1262), in ripe old age, was still living as well.
