Description Abstract Using examples drawn mainly from Iron Age and Roman contexts, this paper considers (i) the need to construct a methodology specific to the evaluation of ploughsoil finds, (ii) the factors which must be taken into account and the underlying assumptions which are generally made in the interpretation of such material and (iii) how some of the main problems of field survey data may be either controlled or circumvented.
