6. | Description | Abstract | The last 20 years or so have seen the development of a number of discourse analytic tools based, to a greater or lesser degree, in the systemic functional model of language – cohesive harmony analysis (Hasan, 1984), rhetorical structure theory (Mann and Thompson, 1987a; Matthiessen, 1987), phasal analysis (Gregory, 1985) and rhetorical unit analysis (Cloran, 1994). As well as reviewing each model in the following sections, the use of each will also be illustrated in the analysis of a short written text. The text selected to illustrate the application of each of these models Sun Damage is a persuasive text type which recommends action for skin problems arising as a result of over-exposure to the sun. |
