6. Description Abstract Since the French Revolution, every French government has wanted to structure a state system of school that instructs pupils and educates citizens. In this paper I discuss how the debate between providing an upbringing and providing an education still continues. The debate ranges from Republican catechism to education in civics, and from teaching a secular moral code to the secular teaching of a moral education
