6. Description Abstract It is commonly assumed that the idea of toleration arose out of modern political philosophy in post-Reformation Europe. But the debate on religious diversity and religious liberty began much earlier, in Greco-Roman Antiquity. This has been a topic of much discussion in scholarship for the last decades with diverse interpretations. The aim of this paper is to revise critically traditional views and current perspectives on religious toleration in the Roman world, a relevant topic for the comparative study of religion.
