6. Description Abstract ’Religious Pluralism’ is a basic concept in the study of religions, but at the same time a challenge because of its normative connotations. The article traces the development of this concept, with special regard to its North-American and European implications. Drawing from recent empirical data, it suggests a clear-cut distinction between 'welcome’ and 'acceptance’ of religious plurality in modern societies.
