6. Description Abstract This book, like most works on contemporary Muslim religious discourses, frequently mentions broader religious and ideological trends that correlate with widely divergent perspectives on hermeneutics and the meaning of the Qurʾān, ranging from modernism to Salafism. This chapter proposes a terminology and categorisation that is adapted to the context of contemporary Qurʾānic interpretation. Discussing the approaches of traditional ʿulamāʾ, modernists, Islamists, Salafis, and Postmodernists, it does not limit itself to outlining their ideas and beliefs, but also situates them in specific social spaces.
