Description Abstract This chapter presents texts from Egypt, Indonesia, and Lebanon that exemplify the ways in which Qurʾānic interpretation is adapted to various purposes, from the spread of the message of Islam to pedagogy and state building. As these examples show, the purpose of an exegetical text has a deep impact on its terminology, form, argument, and the interpretive methods it employs.
