6. Description Abstract This chapter reviews some of the main reasons to explicitly develop non-judgmental observation techniques that support descriptive looking at ELT classrooms via video—namely bias and blinders. Several strategies for what a scaffolded approach can look like are presented, offering a stepwise approach to clarify implementation. Employing these descriptive noticing strategies leads to more effective video analysis, guiding teachers to start with learning to observe objects like classroom photos, student work, or audio non-evaluatively before engaging in a review of video.
