6. Description Abstract The term ‘self-hating Jew’ is applied to Jews
who allegedly hold antisemitic views. The notion
gained widespread currency following the publication
of Theodor Lessing’s Der Judische Selbsthass
(Jewish Self-Hatred) in 1930, in which he tried
to explain the prevalence of Jewish intellectuals
inciting antisemitism with their views toward
Judaism. Currently, the expression is often used
to discount Jews who differ in their lifestyles,
interests or political positions from their critics.
In particular, it refers to Jews who criticize Israeli
policy.
