6. Description Abstract This chapter evaluates the concept of embedding in the framework of the Cardiff Grammar and through this, offers a comparison of its treatment in the Cardiff Grammar as compared to Halliday’s grammar. After reviewing the treatment of embedding in traditional grammar, rankshift and embedding are discussed in relation to grammatical metaphor as well as parataxis and hypotaxis. The comparison considers differences between the two grammars in terms of the theoretical approaches and basic theoretical concerns. The differences are but largely complementary in the sense and as such when combined, they provide a more comprehensive picture of phenomena such as embedding.
