6. Description Abstract This chapter sets the scene of Harry and Sam’s early years by exploring life in rural and coastal Norfolk in the 1870s and 80s. It describes the county’s geography, social life, working life and culture, with a focus on the musical culture of the area. This culture encompassed singing, instruments (especially fiddle and ‘music’, the local name for a melodeon), step-dancing and jig dolls and has been described as one of the richest in England.
