6. | Description | Abstract | Although the monastic lands and properties initially passed to the crown, most were dispersed shortly after, and this chapter examines which groups were the main beneficiaries. Previous historical studies have tended to see land acquisitions in purely abstract economic terms, but through examining the choices made by individuals it is argued that factors other than simple financial gain could be behind these purchases. |
