6. Description Abstract Many studies have chosen to emphasise the wanton destruction of monastic property. This chapter outlines how the archaeological record can provide a more nuanced view of the process of asset stripping, recycling and resale of goods. It also challenges the uncritical use of some contemporary sources, such as Michael Sherbrook, which are often erroneously treated as ‘eyewitness’ accounts.
