Description Abstract Context has probably always been recognised as essential to meaning, since, at least at some level, theorists have needed to incorporate the idea that meaning must depend on context, even if that is only at the level of the surrounding sounds, words, sentences. In this chapter we introduce the notion of context and some of the key concepts that we need to consider when we deal with context.
