6. Description Abstract Although the questions I am addressing use the term “religion” to refer to Buddhism and those it has encountered, its use is problematic. With this in mind, what I intend to convey through these questions is twofold: (1) that Buddhism itself is a diverse tradition that has encountered a kaleidoscope of influential individuals and groups, advocating competing views and ways of life; and (2) that Buddhism has been shaped and influenced by its
interactions with others, while also shaping and influencing those it has encountered.
