6. Description Abstract The author of English Composition Teacher’s Guidebook: How to Survive (and Even Thrive) as an Adjunct or Part-time Instructor, Tom Mulder, has developed a central theme and metaphor of hiking, drawing on his own experience as a hiker, and creatively extrapolating from this experience to his chapter topics. The book is divided into 3 sections of 7 chapters and 4 appendices, each of which begins with a listing of its key topics (Trailhead). The Guide’s chapters open with an illustrative bit of imagined conversation by colleagues over coffee (Coffee Klatsch Collegial Conversation), followed by an inspirational hiking vignette related to the chapter’s content. Each chapter also includes a list of 10 important things to keep in mind (Top 10 List), some sample language to use with students (Lingo), and some relevant questions (Q’s) to ask them that are connected to the chapter content. Other features of each chapter are a bit of humor (Chuckle), a motivational quotation for grammatical analysis (Quotation with Sentence Surgery), and a final bit of talk (Closing Conversation). Chapters include the further features of reflective activities for exploring the chapter topic in relation to one’s own ideas and experience (Trail Marker) and the occasional Signpost pointing to important information elsewhere in the book.
