Abstract |
In World War II, he took part in the D-Day landings, and survived the German gun batteries, only to find himself and fellow black soldiers targeted by white American military police. He went on the run, was recaptured and court martialed. Aboard his returning troop ship he experienced an epiphany on hearing a record by Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie.
