6. Description Abstract Chapter 5, The nature of cultural artefacts, examines the circumstance that, in our environment we are surrounded by the artefacts of our society and our culture. We interact with our world via artefacts and in many ways, they enhance the quality of our lives, and often have significant culture value. These artefacts have a function, purpose and a utility of some kind. In virtue of their ability to retain a cultural significance, the artefacts we value are important because they have the potential to reveal distinctive features of the human mind. Our judgment about the nature and identity of an artefact is sensitive to the context in which we use it, or indeed to the task at hand.
