Equinox Publishing Ltd is an independent academic publisher founded in London in 2003 by Janet Joyce. (Harcourt Brace Jovanovich> Blackwell Publishing> Pinter Publishers> Continuum > Equinox) and, since mid-2011, based in Sheffield, South Yorkshire.
We publish journals, textbooks, anthologies, monographs and reference books in the areas of archaeology, linguistics, cultural history, the academic study of religion, cookery and popular music. Within the cookery and popular music lists we also publish books that attract a more general readership (see subject area listings on this website). In 2015 we have a back list of approximately 230 published books. We are currently publishing around 30 books per calendar year as well as 45 journals.
In 2011 we entered into an unsuccessful merger with another company, Acumen Publishing Ltd. As part of our de-merger in 2012, ownership of parts of our book list and some theology journals were transferred to Acumen. Subsequently those journal titles affected were acquired from Acumen by Maney Publishing and early in 2014, Acumen itself was acquired by Routledge. Thus, we are now smaller than we were a few years ago but we have now resumed publishing in those areas temporarily affected by these transactions.
We have an international author base and audience and match this with worldwide marketing and distribution. North America accounts for nearly half our overall business and journals account for 65% of our turnover.
We belong to the Independent Publishers Guild, the UK Serials Interest Group, the Association of Learned and Professional Society Publishers, Society for Scholarly Publishing and a number of academic learned societies.
