The ruminations that follow are not intended as a scholarly exposition but rather as provocations that poke at our comfortable (Western or Eastern) ethno-centrism, disturb our confidence in the transparency of the ‘culture’ in which we have grown up, question our knowledge of other ‘cultures’, and unsettle our confidence in the ability to ‘read’ the ‘face’ of the Other in interaction.
