This chapter addresses the historical challenges and difficulties that arise when identifying 8th and 7th centuries BC as an "Orientalizing period". Periodization is one of the central ways in which analytical order on the past can be imposed. Debating the term 'Orientalization' concerns the historical construction of the age in question.
