Walt Wolfram is a William C. Friday Distinguished Professor of English Linguistics at North Carolina State University. Although he is most noted for his research on American dialects, his sociolinguistic career started with the study of speaking in tongues.
‘Speaking in tongues’, or, more technically, ‘glossolalia’, is not an uncommon linguistic phenomenon. Glossolalia has been documented in Christianity as well as other religions and in some non-religious practices.
