Andrew Tobolowsky received his Ph.D. from Brown University in 2015. His research has often focused on the history of the tradition of the twelve tribes, as in The Sons of Jacob and the Sons of Herakles (Tübingen: Mohr Siebeck, 2017) and The Myth of the Twelve Tribes of Israel (Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 2022).

Description

To what extent does the fact that the twelve tribes of Israel are so important to many biblical writers prove that these tribes were actually important in the early history of Israel? The various tribal lists paint a complex picture of early Israelite realities that were highly relevant after the fall of the kingdoms of Israel and Judah.
