Chapter 1 presents the problems demonstratives pose for semantic analysis, then offers an overview of demonstratives from a cross-linguistic perspective. By taking a taxonomic approach, the diverse pragmatic functions and their complex relations are also discussed. Finally, a preliminary description of the relevant Hungarian data is provided.
