Global Philosophy

A Sourcebook

Edited by
Mohammed Rustom [+–]
Carleton University
Mohammed Rustom is Professor of Islamic Thought at Carleton University. An award-winning author whose works have been translated into over ten languages, his most recent book is entitled Inrushes of the Heart: The Sufi Philosophy of ʿAyn al-Quḍāt (2022).

Building upon the emerging discourse on the need to deprovincialize teaching and research in philosophy, this first of its kind sourcebook brings together over fifty leading contemporary philosophers in order to highlight the depth, diversity, and creativity of non-Western philosophical traditions. It does so by featuring the major ideas, themes, and arguments of Islamic, Buddhist, Jain, Hindu, Jewish, Taoist, Confucian, Native American, Mayan, Aztec, and Africana philosophy through translations of over eighty philosophical texts from seventeen different languages (namely, Arabic, Aramaic, Chinese, Classic Mayan, English, French, Hebrew, Japanese, Judeo-Arabic, Korean, Maasai, Nahuatl, Oromo, Persian, Sanskrit, Tibetan, and Yoruba). Topics covered include metaphysics, cosmology, epistemology, philosophy of language, logic, ethics, storytelling, philosophy of religion, selfhood, death, and freedom. Global Philosophy: A Sourcebook will prove to be indispensable to all serious students and teachers of philosophy, religion, and pre-modern cultures.
